Spaciotempo hits headlines after lift off at Exeter Airport

The canopy is used as part of a major logistics operation which sees inbound and outbound post handled at the airport and was recently featured within the Porsche Panamera road test on BBC Two’s Top Gear.

Due to the complex restrictions at the site - which include a triangular shaped working area and the potential for high winds due to the canopy’s exposed position alongside the main runway - Spaciotempo was required to deliver a unique solution.

The result is a temporary triangular building which is 25m wide on one gable end, reducing to 20m wide in the centre then 15m wide at the narrowest end. This gives a total footprint of 975m² – maximising virtually all of the space available. Working within strict security and health and safety parameters at the airport site, Spaciotempo has developed the robust structure to withstand extreme weather conditions.

Indeed, specifically sourced by Spaciotempo for this application, a new design of walling panel was used on the structure. The panels are perforated to allow through flow of wind but still provide a level of shelter and protection from the rain and snow.

Modifications to the structure had to be made on site due to two containers - which were scheduled to be removed - remaining in situ. Spaciotempo installation engineers had to work over and around them and adapt the original designs for the gable end to accommodate the obstructions.

The contract for the building is scheduled to run for three years, however, due to the success of the installation, Exeter Airport is already considering Spaciotempo structures for additional projects on the site.

The inherent strength of the buildings – built to BS standards - is gained from the aluminium box profile frame which provides snow and wind loadings that are equivalent to permanent structures. The roof, manufactured from the most durable PVC coated polyester, is flame retardant.
