A tunnel fit for a king at King Abdullah Stadium

We installed a Retractable Tunnel fit for a king – or the brand new King Abdullah Stadium to be exact. Located north of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the new stadium is part of the multi-use King Abdullah Sports City.

The ten-metre long tunnel will be used on the state-of-the-art main stadium that will mostly be used for football. At just over five metres wide and with a total height of just under three metres, the tunnel also has nylon wheels with lift proof tracks.

With a capacity of 60,000 spectators, the stadium opened at the end of November 2013 with a series of friendly football matches in preparation for the 22nd Gulf Football Cup.

King Abdullah Sports City is spread over three million square meters and as well as a world-class soccer stadium, has royal suites and VIP cabins close to the ground. This is the second big soccer stadium in Saudi Arabia along with King Fahd stadium in Riyadh.

The stadium seating system is built on three levels facilitating a clear view of the ground. The roof is covered with a special hard cloth with steel mesh to protect spectators from the sun and rain. Advanced technology is in place to control the temperature in the stadium.

The sports city also has a mosque, 10,000-seater indoor sports arena, an outdoor athletics stadium, and several other outdoor sport facilities such as tennis courts and soccer practice pitches. It also has arenas for badminton, basketball, handball, volleyball, and track and field.

The facility has been named in King Abdullah’s honour after he gave his approval for the construction of the project back in February 2009, with building work commencing in 2012.
